The way I work

I work as an Integrative Humanistic Counsellor and Supervisor. I hold a strong person-centred philosphy, that respects the uniqueness of each person and the unique ways in which individuals grow and change. A person-centred approach holds the belief that each person has the inner resources and knowledge that they need for their personal development.

The counsellor assists you in your journey towards greater self knowledge and self understanding, through the quality and depth of the counselling relationship whereby the natural process of growth and change can take place. In this way, the person centred approach is a 'way of being' rather than a technique of therapy.

As an integrative counsellor, I also embrace other counselling theories such as TA, Gestalt and Psychodynamic which can be very helpful in understanding aspects of the work we do together and these different approaches are held by the centrality of the therapuetic relationship as defined by P. Clarkson and the person-centred approach.

The counselling relationship is one that embraces:

  • trust - by my understanding of the courage it takes for you to be open and honest in sessions, take risks, show ones vulnerability and know that this will be held safely, with the utmost support and respect
  • respect of your uniqueness - in a relationship where you can truely and increasing 'be yourself'.
  • non-judgemental and accepting - through my acceptance of your personal values, beliefs and choices
  • empathic - by making every effort to understand you and your world
  • ethical - by upholding the values, principles and morals of ethical practice as held by the BACP Ethical Framework , of which I am a member.
